Making a mark
PREETHI RANGANAYAKI has moved from Kannada films to make a mark in Tamil films with Velu Prabhakaran's Kathal Arangam, a film that re-defines man-woman relationships. Prabhakaran who is known for his action-based revolutionary themes has opted to tackle the issue of discrimination of women in society.
No, it is not a feminist theme dealing with the atrocities committed on women. On the contrary, it is an out-and-out commercial masala on sexuality aimed at making a moolah at the box-office. There is more to the story as he exposes the hypocrisy prevalent in our society on a particular subject.
His first choice for the heroine's role was Rasi. She worked for five days and the director found she could not fit into the role as he had visualised. So he zeroed in on starlet Preethi Ranganayaki whose Kannada film, Excuse Me was a big hit. "I would feel terrible seeing myself on screen. But Kathal Arangam has shaped up very well and I am happy about it. "Offers are coming my way from Tamil filmmakers. I have signed Kastoori Raja's next film," says a beaming Preethi. She plays a prostitute in the movie with loads of glamour attached to her role.
