From here to eternity

Born in Kochi, Merita D'souza won the Miss Talented title in the Miss India 2004 contest.

FOR A brief homecoming to the city of her birth, Miss Talented, Ponds Femina, Miss India 2004, Merita D'souza, said, " My family is firmly rooted in Kochi. My grandparents are here. We are Anglo Indians from Edacochin but I was brought up in Coimbatore." To launch a range of sanitary ware in the city, tall, lissom and perfectly poised the young model recalled the pangs of anxiety she underwent before getting a call for the big beauty pageant. Said Merita, " You will not believe it but I was wearing a plastic crown on my head and posing in front of the mirror, when the call came. I froze when I heard the voice at the other end asking the details about my participation. After a fifteen minute query on the formalities they said I was selected."

A call that firmly propelled her into her dream world of fashion and modelling.

And what during the beauty pageant enabled her to win this coveted title? " We had two selection rounds. I mimed the entire Miss India training. I painted my face black and white and am good at acting with a mask. That won me the title of Miss Talent."

The whole range of experience, of meeting other contestants, of a month long training, of travelling to new places, of swim wear and evening wear rounds, of quick, intelligent answers have all matured the young girl into a confident lady. Said she realistically, " I know modelling and a fashion career is short lived. I will give my 100 per cent while I am in it but after that I plan to pursue something in media and television." Having done a brief stint in Tamil film Kakka, kakka and Kaathal Virus, a career in films is not out of her fold. " If anything comes along, why not? I can give it a try."

After touching the giddy heights of fame and beauty, Merita remains a young woman with her head on her shoulders." Yes, Kerala is slow to the world of modelling and fashion, but it is better this way. In the fashion world, I would rank Mumbai on the top followed by Bangalore and then Chennai. I am not aware of the scene in Delhi, though!"

Appearance being the most important ingredient in her world, She is beautifully precocious as she says, " Real beauty comes from a good character. For being an engineer you need brains but for modelling too you cannot be dumb. Yet, looks are very important in this field. A complete picture of the person should emerge in a beauty contest." On the hue and cry raised over swim wear rounds, as sexist and feminist, Merita is carefully worded. " I suppose people are comfortable with women from other places but when it is their own women they get paranoid. It is fine by me. We are in the fashion industry." With a great love for music and dance, both classical and western, Merita said she was praying hard that she would not be quizzed on politics at the Miss India contest. " In fact most of us use to pray hard for that," revealing that she is clueless on that front.

And with opportunities at her feet, the wide world standing with open arms she has choices a plenty." No, I will not enter the Miss India contest again but will go for a few international ones like Ford modelling contest and even Monte Carlo is happening... " So, our little girl from Edacochin, who left for Coimbatore as a baby, is indeed going places, far and high!
