Sonia is sona

Sonia Gandhi's decision not to be the Prime Minister was not a knee-Jerk reaction but a strategic renunciation that blunts the Sangh Parivar's attack and enhances her stature as a leader.

She has killed six birds with one stone.

1) She has erased the controversial issue of her foreign origin.

2) She has managed to return to power without acquiring the burden of prime ministership.

3) The DMK, PMK and others agreed to join the Government while earlier, they supported from outside.

4) Sharad Pawar agreed for merger of the National Congress Party with the Indian National Congress.

5) The former Prime Ministers - P.V.Narasimha Rao, V.P.Singh, I.K.Gujral, Deve Gouda and A.B. Vajpayee attended the swearing-in ceremony of the new government

6) And, Vajpayee emulated Sonia by refusing to become the Leader of the Opposition.

In addition, for the first time since Nehru, the president of the Congress will be more powerful than the Prime Minister and the threat to Sonia's life will be minimal and Rahul Gandhi's plunge into active politics will perpetuate the Nehru-Gandhi legacy.

No, Sonia Gandhi's decision is not correct. Because she is the only person capable of leading the country towards progress. People collectively elected and accepted her for the Prime Minister's post. In a democracy what is more important than people's will? She should not have bothered about issues like her foreign origin, protests by the BJP and the nose-diving of the stock markets. I feel she took a wrong step.

Yes, the decision taken by Sonia Gandhi is correct. Any other step on her part might have split the nation into two parts based on the issue of her foreign origin. Sonia's gesture of sacrificing the coveted post of Prime Minister keeping in view the welfare of the country at a time when even a local political leader does not wish to sacrifice his/her post, is indeed appreciable.

Ms. Gandhi's is a practical decision used as an ultimate weapon to silence her critics who were desperate to raise the bogey of her foreign origin issue. It was not fair on the part of her critics who tried to gain mileage on the issue of her foreign origin. Why didn't they think of her foreign origin when she became an MP or the Leader of the Opposition. The issue is being raised now to prevent her from being the Prime Minister of the country. As is being alleged, it is not Sonia but her political detractors who are playing dirty politics.

In my opinion, Ms. Gandhi has taken an appropriate decision paving the way for Manmohan Singh to take over as the Prime Minister of the country. The move has not only silenced her critics but has also enabled her to win the hearts of many, not only in India, but all over the world.

Knowing that she is the right political successor of the Nehru family, people of the country have given their mandate in her favour. But, she was never after power. She had not wanted the post even at time of Rajiv Gandhi's assassination.

Yes, Sonia Gandhi's decision is correct and commendable. It is more in tune with the realities of the ground situation rather than a sacrifice. Her decision to forgo the highest elected office in India should be respected and not be diluted with the sentiments and emotions exhibited by her supporters and even detractors. The Italian-born Congress president who could have been the Prime Minister of the nation by May 19, has grown enormously in political and moral stature. Ms.Gandhi's preference for Mr.Singh to head the country deserves praise. It also shows her sense of commitment to her party, family and the country. The new coalition government that will be led by Mr.Singh has the opportunity to build on this advantage and achieve progress at a brisk pace.

Yes, Sonia's decision is correct. It is wise on her part to listen to her inner voice rather than cowing down to protests by the likes of Sushma Swarajs, Uma Bharatis and Govindacharyas of the country. She could have taken over as the Prime Minister in 1991 itself had she desired to be, given the circumstances that followed her husband, Rajiv Gandhi's assassination. But, she has proven wrong all her critics who tried to project her as power-hungry. Despite mounting pressure to take up the prime ministerial mantle, her unwavering determination not to take up the job only reposed the faith of the people in the nobility of politics and public service. According to articles 14,15,74,75 & 84 of the Indian Constitution, she has every right to become a Prime Minister. Hence, it is one of the great sacrifices in the political history and her stature has gone up by leaps and bounds.

No, the decision of Sonia Gandhi is not correct. I feel that she was forced to decline the post of the Prime Minister mainly due to the vociferous protests by her political detractors. Sonia at the helm of the affairs could usher in Indira Gandhi's rule in the country. As a woman, she would have been in an advantageous position to know the problems of country. Promotion of ties with other countries would have paved way for all-round development of the nation. The recent elections are a proof that people have accepted as the Prime Minister. She should not have rejected the post.

I think that the decision of Sonia Gandhi is correct. She would have invited grave risk by choosing to head the nation as its Prime Minister. The fears of her children, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi, for her life are after all, not unfounded. The BJP, meanwhile, would have got an opportunity to exploit the situation to the hilt.

Sonia's inexperience could lead to inefficient administration. On the contrary, Manmohan Singh has the experience of having worked as a Finance Minister and the Governor of the RBI. Thus, he can manage the country's economy better than anyone else.

The decision of Ms. Gandhi seems to be correct. She probably has her own doubts with regard to her Indian citizenship. Though she was married to an Indian long time ago, she did not take any immediately steps to obtain Indian citizenship for about 15 years. Fearing that this particular aspect may cause legal tangles, she must have opted to listening to what she calls her `inner voice'.

Although Ms. Gandhi was unanimously elected the alliance's Prime Ministerial candidate, she made a wise move of forgoing the prestigious post that brought a smile on the faces of millions of Indians who did not want to be ruled by an alien to the country. Freedom fighters have laid down their lives to break the bonds of slavery and foreign rule. Have they done it to be once again ruled by a foreigner? Has our country not given birth to any potential leader who can lead the march towards progress? Ms. Gandhi's prime move not to accept the Prime Minister's post is absolutely a perfect decision that will keep her away from troubles and pave a path for our progress under the leadership of an Indian by birth.

In my opinion, the decision of Sonia Gandhi is correct. Because no other Minister in the Congress Cabinet is as wise and experienced as Manmohan Singh. On the other hand, Ms. Gandhi would have raked up a furious controversy across the country regarding her origin, had she accepted the highest office. The BJP would have gained maximum mileage by exploiting the situation.

Sonia Gandhi has taken the right decision. As per our Constitution, a repre- sentative of the country must be a `born citizen' of India rather than having an acquired citizenship'. It is ridiculous to hand over the post of the Prime Minister to her ignoring the several sons of soil who are more efficient, experienced and honest about the country's development.

In my opinion, Sonia's decision is absolutely correct. Instead of inviting a grave threat to her life as feared by her two children, she can fulfil her desire to serve people of this nation even as the Congress president. Manmohan Singh, meanwhile, is an apt candidate for the PM's post. Sonia is very much an Indian but she has done the right thing by denying the PM's post as it place her under serious risk.

Ms.Gandhi's move would prove to be fruitful in future, both for the people as well as for herself. The move will help the Congress grow in stature and further consolidate its position by next polls. It is easy to conclude that she has won the hearts of people which would automatically bring the PM's post to her feet in future.

Yes, the decision taken by her is correct. One should respect one's `inner voice'. Though her decision has upset many party leaders and the poor who hoped to see Indira Gandhi's rule once again, it augurs well for Sonia to keep herself away from the post.

Ms. Gandhi led the Congress party to a thumping victory in the recent polls and thus, is the most deserving candidate for the prime ministership. But, she turned it down for she never hankered after power. One should, however, hope that the country will have a secular and stable Government under the able leadership of Manmohan Singh.

Sonia Gandhi took a wise decision. She has made a great sacrifice. She should also be appreciated for choosing the right presom to head the Congress-led coalition Government at the Centre. Her move should be acknowledged and commended by one and all.

It is correct. By declining the post of Prime Minister, Sonia Gandhi has created a towering image for herself in Indian politics.

She not only foiled the BJP's game-plan of cashing in on the bogey of her foreign origin issue, but has showed uncanny wisdom in making Dr. Manmohan Singh take over the reigns of power.

Sonia has exercised a master stroke which silenced the likes of Sushma ,Uma, Govindacharya and Venkaiah Naidu of the BJP besides proving herself more Indian by means of her sacrifice than anyone else.

The Congress should take pride in Sonia's gesture which has improved her political stature beyond anybody's guess.

I support her decision. Rejecting the PM's post is not a simple task. I am not sure how many politicians can take such a decision? The resounding victory of the Congress party is in itself a great achievement for Sonia. She also deserves kudos for selecting Dr. Manmohan Singh as for the post as he is a good economist. One can only hope that the country will make rapid strides in terms of its economy, under his stewardship.

Despite tremendous pressure by the Congress leaders and others, Ms. Gandhi displayed her generosity by sacrificing the coveted post of the Prime Minister. Her move is causing a lump in the throat of the BJP and other political detractors. Proving wrong the general belief that power plays a major role in politics, she has won the hearts of people who now hold her in high esteem.

The decision of Ms. Gandhi appears to be genuine. One should admit that the prevailing conditions in the country are not conducive to appreciate Sonia in the PM's gaddi. The drawbacks on the personal front coupled with the existing circumstances might have prompted her to turn down the post of the Prime Minister.

Yes, I do feel that she has made the right move. By doing so, she has risen above all other politicians. The BJP's game-plan to cash in on the issue of her foreign origin boomeranged as the party has won the hatred of the Indian public rather than winning their support.

Sonia's move is also an eye-opener for the people who ought to realise that they should choose a leader who works for their welfare, irrespective of his or her origin. Sonia, with her decision has secured a place in theIndian politics. I feel that she may feel it her responsibility to guide her Cabinet ministers rather than enjoying power directly.

In a reversal of fortunes, the Congress is back to power after eight years and the person behind this political spell-binder is Ms. Gandhi who made the miracle happen by undertaking an issue-based campaign. It is very unfortunate that after all the hard work, she refused to accept the country's top political post. But I feel that what she has done is in the interest of the Congress party and the nation as a whole. By renouncing the post of the Prime Minister, she has not only set a new precedent in politics but has also deprived the Sangh Parivar of a major political issue that could have benefited these Hindu fundamentalists for a long time. Those who talked about her foreign origin should hang their heads in shame. She stands tall among her contemporaries for her act.

By declining the post of Prime Minister, Sonia Gandhi has shown a great political maturity. She gave a fitting reply to the BJP's abusive campaign against her by gaining sympathy of even people who sentimentally rejected her prime ministership.

As a Prime Minister, she would have given enough fodder to the media to highlight her drawbacks and link it with her foreign origin which would have worked in favour of the BJP and the Sangh Parivar. But with a leader like Manmohan Singh, a great economist, in the Prime Minister's seat, focus would be shifted on development instead of rotten politics.

In my opinion, people who are in political arena should echo the nation's inner voice rather than following their personal inner voice.

Refusing to get carried away by the BJP's campaign against her, people of the nation overwhelmingly voted in her favour. But she deceived and cheated the people of this country by refusing to accept the responsibilities in a breach of the trust reposed in her by them.

Her decision of making Manmohan Singh is yet another blunder. Mr. Singh, I feel, is a right man in a wrong place. Sachin Tendulkar cannot play Tennis like Evan Lendel.

Yes, she took the right decision by choosing Manmohan Singh to head the country.

Mr. Singh is a leader with a clean image and has all the leadership qualities needed to lead the country in the right path. But, the sacrifice that Ms. Gandhi made will surely be remembered in the political history of the nation.

I support Sonia Gandhi in her move. She is not an Indian citizen by birth but she is one only by her virtue. INDIA doesn't have the need a foreign Prime Minister.

It is ridiculous to allow a foreigner to lead the nation brushing aside the numerous leaders who are gifted with all the qualities needed to hold the top post.

Ms. Gandhi's decision is correct. Sonia has exercised the right stroke at the right time, a hallmark of the Nehru-Gandhi politics. I strongly feel that one must save India first before wanting to see it shine. It could be made possible if the United Progressive Alliance Government works for the betterment of the common man.

I would like to praise the incredible decision of Madam Sonia Gandhi for not accepting the Prime Minister's post which is remarkable in the history of Indian politics where no leader can make such a sacrifice. She has created a record by nominating an apolitical person for the responsible post.

Ms. Gandhi's decision is right and the rarest. It has cleared the mist once again decisively that she is not after power. Her act has elevated her to a very high pedestal where she stands as an undisputed leader of rare statesmanship.

Kudos to Ms. Gandhi. She has made India shine in its true sense by her act of renunciation.

I feel Ms.Sonia Gandhi was right in sacrificing the post of Prime Minister and choosing Manmohan Singh for it. Right from the beginning, her candidative is being opposed by many political leaders. Moreover choosing a financial expert like Dr.Manmohan Singh as India's Prime Minister helps our nation a lot in overcoming the financial problems. His past experience with the party and the Nehru-Gandhi family will definitely help him in developing good strategies for the overall development of the nation.

A. Mallika

Sonia has taken a good decision. Our country's financial and defence decisions are taken by the Prime Minister. The opinion of the people that Nehru's family is ruling the country is also erased because of this decision.

Yes, her decision is right. Instead of her holding the position of the prime minister, she has made a senior leader, Manmohan Singh the prime minister. She has entered into politics only after her husband's assassination. It would be nice if she holds the position of a prime minister after araising a few more years of experience. As a close observer of the functioning of the government in the leadership of Manmohan, she will also be able to gain experience.

G.Kusuvanya,
MBA, ICFAI National College, Vijayawada.

The decision taken by Mrs.Sonia Gandhi is correct. India requires Prime Minister who understands the present situation well. A person in that position needs to understand the situation of our country's finance and foreign matters. Even if Sonia Gandhi becomes the Prime Minister, she needs help from others. The present Prime Minister Manmohan Sing can take correct decisions in all matters of our country.

Ch.Pallavi
MBA, ICFAI National College, Vijayawada

Eversince Rajiv's assassination and especially when the Congress party was in deep leadership crisis, Sonia Gandhi was virtually coerced to enter into politics to strengthen the image of the party. Though she agreed reluctantly, she proved beyond doubt her leadership qualities by regarding the lost glory of the party. Being the floor leader in Lok Sabha and also as her citizenship as an Indian was pronounced by the court, she is, by all means, eligible to occupy the august office. Further, Indian constitution also does not bar a person of foreign origin from becoming the Prime Minister. Sonia Gandhi maintained utmost dignity and dex aterity despite virulent comments made on her by the opposition parties. However, it is Sonia Gandhi all the way and her decision has raised her personality to dizzy heights defiling the purity of her adversaries.

Smt. S. Vijaya Seshu, M.A.,B.Ed.,

The decision of Sonia Gandhi is absolutely correct. Because, opposition leaders were not accepting her as the Prime Minister. She strived hard to win the elections and, at last, she proved herself to be a good leader.

I have a firm belief that under the rule of Sonia and Manmohan, India will become one of the most developed countries.
