Beyond desire

THE KAMA Sutra may be overly publicised of late, but a recent publication of Inner Traditions International Limited, brought to India by New Age Books, New Delhi, promises to be an eye-opener for readers regarding a less discussed aspect.

The book "Eros, Consciousness, and Kundalini: Deepening Sensuality through Tantric Celibacy and Spiritual Intimacy" by the U.S.-based Stuart Sovatsky begins with the author's description of his own discovery of Tantric celibacy. How he achieved what he had thought impossible - that he could be celibate for over a year and find his desire for sex sublimating into a higher energy, and was drawn to attempt when an Indian yogi at a retreat threw out a stirring challenge - is described and followed by examples and lucid explanations taken from his vast study of Yoga, sociology and history as well as interviews with practitioners.

Using theory, analysis practical explanations of Yoga asanas and diagrams, he introduces the reader to Tantric celibacy, which is considered helpful for a number of reasons. These include healing for the sexually abused, a deeper knowledge of the link between sexuality and spirituality, enhancing the relationship between life partners and gaining mastery over one's body, among others.

Practicing kundalini Yoga for over two decades, Dr. Sovatsky is the director of psychotherapy clinics in California besides teaching at JFK University and the California Institute of Integral Studies.
