Digging spree

ROADS ARE being dug and with a vengeance in the twin cities. Some of the busiest thoroughfares have been dug up in recent days, ostensibly to lay sewer lines or cable — electricity or optic fibre.

It appears that the rules stipulated by the MCH on the manner in which roads can be dug are being ignored. Trenchless digging, without cutting the road across and specifying the date of completion are not being followed anymore.

With open pits and debris strewn on the roadside, sweeping at nights too has become ineffective. Some of the firms involved in digging are not even bothering to wait for a proper permit before digging.

It can be noted that the MCH is directly responsible for any danger to commuters and pedestrians for allowing these diggings, especially with the monsoon on the horizon.
