The winner is...
THE SUMMER box-office results in Tamil are out and the clear winner by a mile is "Ghilli", a blockbuster. According to trade sources, it is likely to get a distributor's share of over Rs. 20 crores! The last film to cross this magic figure was Rajnikanth's "Padayappa" in 1999. All credit goes to director Dharani who reworked the Telugu "Okkadu" with minor changes to suit the Tamil audience. With "Ghilli" Vijay has bounced back to superstardom and his larger-than-life image with a comic touch has worked especially with women and children. "Ghilli" is expected to do business worth Rs. 1.75 to Rs. 1.90 crores in Coimbatore. In Chennai city alone, the film has grossed an amazing Rs. 1.06 crores from four cinemas in 35 days, a new record. The film is a hit all over Tamil Nadu and has celebrated 51 days in 106 stations and also bailed out its producer A. M. Ratnam who was in the red. Two other summer releases which are a "safe" bet for its distributors are "Peralagan" and "Aethiri". Meanwhile, the other summer releases have not fared too well.
