An EVENING out
|
If you are part of an audience, there are certain rules to follow that will make the event enjoyable for all.
|
A WELL-KNOWN classical vocalist recently said in an interview, "It is a pleasure to perform for the audience abroad. Their respect for the art, the artiste and the environment is inspiring. There is pin drop silence and absolutely no disturbance from people moving up and down the aisles. Here, there is always a rustle and restlessness in the audience which is very distracting."
How true! As part of an audience, we have experienced this phenomenon before and have been annoyed by it. Think about the artiste, especially a classical musician in concert where the tradition is to let creativity take wing to render a one-of-its-kind masterpiece each time.
Any time is agood time to be reminded of what it takes to be a good audience. Being part of an audience is not just for our own enjoyment; we are also individually responsible for the continued enjoyment of others as well.
Observance of these rules will make it a great experience for everyone including the artiste.
* Be seated at least five minutes before the concert is set to begin. It is extremely annoying for others to keep getting up to let you through. The constant opening and shutting of the auditorium doors is not only an irritation; it also disturbs the artistes as well.
* When the stage curtain parts or the invocation song starts, please cease all conversations.
* Make sure beepers, cell phones and watch alarms are OFF.
* Ideally speaking, don't bring children. If you must, it is your responsibility to keep them quiet and confined. Don't take the attitude of "children will be children" making others think "Children should be seen and not heard"! Don't expect a collective understanding of your baby sitter problems, or for others to adjust their pleasure for your sake.
* Unwrap any goodies that you brought with you before the concert begins so as to avoid the rustling, tearing sounds.
* Thou shall not talk during the performance.
* Refrain from humming, singing along, or beating time with a body part. If it is a movie, you don't have to advertise the fact that you are watching it for the tenth time by repeating the dialogues loudly or announcing what is going to come in the next scene.
* Avoid leaning your heads together, as you tend to block the view of the person sitting behind you.
* Go easy with your perfume/ cologne as many people are highly allergic to them But, make sure your deodorant is effective.
* Yes, the parking lot gets busy and public transportation is tricky, but leaving while the show is in progress is discourteous.
As a member of an audience, it is your responsibility to take the enjoyment of others seriously and so, fulfil it by being quietly attentive, or silently inattentive and exhibit self-restraint . You can be as noisy as you want before and after the performance and you have the intermission, as well. Make it an enjoyable occasion for everyone and the best in the artiste comes out naturally. After all, they derive a lot of their energy and enthusiasm from the audience.
