Kashmiri Saivism has inspired artist Srinivasa Ravikumar, whose paintings are on show at Lalit Kala Akademi

THE TITLE suggests flaming passion and fiery emotion but the exhibition at the Lalit Kala Akademi is a pictorial representation of communion with Shiva in various forms and through various channels.
Artist Srinivasa Ravikumar has drawn from Kashmiri Saivism as inspiration for his 115 paintings, delineating the wisdom of the ancients in the search for the self. "Communion with Shiva can take many forms," says Ravikumar. "The works have an ethereal quality to them because they take you through the Saivite philosophy of Swami Lakshmanajoo."
Each of the 115 works Ravikumar has on display carries a couple of lines of Saivite philosophy, which he has used as the basis for his work. He uses felt-tipped pens, pencils, ink, oils and watercolours as his media of meditation, drawing out the meaning and nuances of each sloka. Ideas are broken down and colours are blended to depict movement from the material world to the spiritual world, aiming to show people how to focus on the big picture.
Ravikumar, who has been a banker and an advertising copywriter, has been dabbling in art for the past 30 years. He has two previous exhibitions to his credit. This series on Saivite philosophy and salvation took him two-and-a-half years to complete.
The exhibition titled, "Sexessence of Shiva", is on till June 21, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Lalit Kala Akademi Gallery, Greams Road, Nungambakkam, ph: 28291692.
