Dev, Time Music, Rs. 55
THIS FILM brings back Govind Nihalani with a cop saga. It also brings back the ace director-cameraman and Om Puri after two decades.
The major difference in Dev is the presence of Amitabh Bachchan. Aadesh Shrivastav scores music like usual for this Big B starrer. And the score is definitely not run-of-the-mill for a change. Aadesh has certainly put in some hard work. Nida Fazli has some good lyrics (while Govind Nihalani writes one song) for Aadesh to work on.
Rang Deeni, the first song, sets the tenor for what is to follow although this song gives one a sense of `having-heard-it-before'. Kareena Kapoor's singing attempt was much publicised.
The effective orchestration does the trick in Jab nahin aaye the tum - Kareena sings in a calculated fashion - her vocal ability is just about okay - conveying the mood of the song - a girl remembering her beloved. Fardeen Khan recites some lines of poetry which form the backdrop to this song. The second time it is rendered by Vijeta Pandit (the actress who acted with Kumar Gaurav in Love Story), the wife of Aadesh Shrivastav. She certainly does a melodious job of it.
Tujh sang bandhi dor (Nihalani's lyric) by Sonu Nigam stands out for Sonu's voice. This semi-classical song is sung extremely well by Sonu and the music does not overshadow his voice.
Aadesh gives his best to the two songs Allahu and Mangalam Ganesham - the storyline has the communal element between the Hindus and Muslims. Asha Bhonsle is at her usual best in Allahu (well supported by Aadesh himself), a song which has a Sufi and `qawwali' feel. Abhijit is able to maintain the required devotional fervour in Mangalam Ganesham.
Big B's baritone is reserved till the end of the album. He speaks about a police officer's duty in a restrained voice nevertheless powerful.
Dev's music will certainly appeal to all those who are looking for something refreshing and slightly offbeat.
