Chilling out in style
K.J
HOW STRESSED out are you these days? Very, I bet! If it isn't the quarterly reports, it may be deadlines, sales targets or the boss offloading an avalanche of papers to be filed and processed. Stressed out and spaced out is your state of being for about 300 days of the year.
So, are there any quick tricks that can prevent you from going grey and batty, and put you in control? While you can't escape stress altogether, you can learn to re-engineer your approach to calm your nerves and be on top of any situation. This will gear you up to cope positively with the big S and ensure that you keep the monster at bay.
Smart, suave and sophisticated - the new-age business executive looks so cool. But the fresh smile on his face in the morning wilts by noon, and almost ceases to exist by the end of the day. "Everyday, I end up with a horrible headache. If not, the back or the legs or fingers or the eye ache," says R Santhosh, business head in a private bank.
Spending quality time with the family is a stress reliever. So, most busy executives reserve dinner time for family. "I see to it that I spend some light moments with my family," Santosh adds.
For some "work out, chill out" is the new mantra that's helping them emerge winners in any situation.
They also hang out with buddies, take in a movie or go to an art exhibition, develop a new hobby, read, write poetry or just watch television.
"Even an invigorating shower works in helping ease tension and stress," they say. Also on top of their priority list is the need to maintain a healthy balance between work life and personal life. "You'll enjoy an enriched life this way," they add.
Once you have acknowledged that your life is topsy-turvy, avoiding people and situations that stress you is an ideal way of streamlining stress.
"Whenever I'm stressed, I take a deep breath, close my eyes and think of the breathtaking beauty of a hill station like Ooty," says Radhika, a 31-year-old homemaker.
Another thing that helps keep stress at bay is having some time for yourself.
"I go on a shopping spree when I feel life is going out of control. Though I spend huge amounts of money, it helps maintain my cool," says a young creative writer.
For her, dreaming is also big time relaxation. "Dreaming about my new house, which I intend to construct some day, rejuvenates my tired mind," she adds.
And, what does she do when she's not dreaming? "Sports," is her instant reply.
Spirituality is also a wonderful way to cope with stress. "One should connect with God to understand the purpose of life and get a direction. When the mind is stress-free, it is easy to understand our inner potential and to excel in all individual endeavours. That takes away the disillusionment," executives say.
Another must: Laughter, the best medicine. So, take time to find humour in stressful situations.
Laugh at least 20 times a day and refrain from taking yourself too seriously. Finally, go on vacations.
They are important for the well being of both your body and mind.
