Comedy trail

COMEDY IS a difficult genre to perfect, especially when it is made for television. It has to be dialogue-based and the artistes can't have too many retakes. One comedy artiste who has made quite an impact in recent times is Ponvannan, who plays Gomathinayakam in "Annamalai." His satirical comedy reminds one of the M. R. Radha films of the black and white era. Says Ponvannan: "The character of Gomathinayakam has made me a household name as he has a streak of villainy." Ponvannan has bid goodbye to the small screen and is concentrating on the big screen. He will soon be seen as the hero and director of "Gomathinayakam," which is an out-and-out comedy. He says: "Earlier, I used to do small roles in films but thanks to "Annamalai," my popularity has soared. Doing comedy on the big screen is a different experience as it allows you a lot of freedom."
