Share auto

THE `SHARE auto' business is growing in Tiruchi. Over crowding in share autos should be prevented. On routes, where frequency of city buses is more, share autos need not ply. Instead, they can help waiting passengers in places where there are limited buses. To avoid congestion, it would be ideal to have separate share auto for men and women.

WHEN SHARE autos were introduced in Tiruchi, the travelling public considered it a blessing since auto drivers were fleecing the public. But of late, these share autos have become a nightmare and nuisance to the public for various reasons. The share-auto drivers are notorious for their rash driving and the vehicles are overflowing with passengers. They have become running coffins on Tiruchi roads. The district administration should put a blanket ban on these share autos in the interest of the citizens.

THE INTRODUCTION of share auto is definitely benefiting the middle and lower classes. It halts almost at every stop and even at places where people prefer to get out making it a friendly mode of transport. During the busy hours, the presence of share auto is really felt. However, it has its own disadvantages. The share autos with three wheels cannot balance in places where it takes a turn resulting in frequent accidents. Share autos also travel at top speed putting the life of cyclists and motorcycle riders at stake. If only the share autos are slightly modified by fitting four wheels, where it gets equally balanced, and the speed is reduced, it would definitely ensure the safety of the travelling public.

THE SHARE auto has become a necessary evil in Tiruchi. It serves the unconnected areas where town bus service is less frequent or not available. Share autos provide necessary link to suburban areas which otherwise cannot be reached for lack of transport facility. The introduction of share autos has brought down auto fares. The problem of overloading, however, remains. The mobile traffic police should keep a check on this violation. On Sundays and holidays, many share autos withdraw services which must be curbed by the RTO.

SHARE AUTORICKSHAWS seem to be a menace than a safe mode of transport in the city. Drivers of these vehicles violate traffic rules frequently, leading to accidents, a majority of them proving fatal. People prefer this vehicle as a cheaper mode of transport but their safety seems to be in jeopardy. It is high time the Police and Transport Department authorities launch a co-ordinated action to regulate the safe operation of the share autorickshaws.
