Back in action

THE LEGISLATIVE Council will be a reality now with the Legislative Assembly passing a resolution to pave the way for the re-creation of the 90-member body. After the Telugu Desam Government headed by late N. T. Ramarao abolished the council, there have been attempts in the past for the revival of the council but nothing came of it. The reconstitution of the council was one of the election promises of the Congress party and it has kept its word.

Meanwhile, there are two schools of thought on the need for Legislative Council. While there are those who argue that it would be an additional burden on the State exchequer, others say that the Council would be the forum to avail the services of distinguished personalities from various walks of life to improve governance. "One could thus save crores of rupees spent on consultancy services as was the case in the previous Telugu Desam Government," a senior political leader said.
