Not so righteous!
Amarr Upadhyay.
THE SMALL screen has made him. Yet, the lure of the silver screen is stronger in Amarr Upadhyay. Three apprearances in films - Dhund The Fog, Wah Wah Ramji and LOC - K argil. All flops. In fact, he is still recognised as the original Mihir, whose screen death in the tele-serial Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi on Star Plus ruffled many a popular sentiment. And still, he broke many hearts and left TV for a film break that never took off.
"Even then I would say it was not a wrong decision to leave the popular role of Mihir. I liked doing the serial. I was enjoying the audience response too. But suddenly, the serial leaped 20 years forward. I was to become an old man. I did not like the idea. Don't you see, it is still dragging," Amarr reasons. He did not want to be a part of it, he insists. For, "If you are seen as an old man on TV screens everyday, the audience would find it odd when you act your age in other roles." Well, to each his own.
Vowing never to return to the tube, he came back though, in a role in Aroona Irani's Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand on Star Plus. Though out of it now, come next Monday, he will resurface on the small screen yet again. This time on Sahara Manoranjan's new serial, Saathiya - Pyar Ka Naya Ehsaas. To be aired Monday through Thursday, it is a half-hour run at 8.30 p.m. "I have a reason for returning to television. When Aroonaji was looking for someone for a role in Des Mein... , she approached me. I said no, she said yes. This yes-no went on for some time, and then her husband Kuku Kohli convinced me to do it," Amarr states.
Sounds like a bit of a package deal, because the next film that Amarr is doing and banking heavily on to make a mark in Bollywood is a Kuku Kohli production. "We plan to start shooting in November this year and release it by January next year," he says, though not giving away the name of the film.
Excited about the role of Kshitij in Saathiya... , he says, "I am not so righteous as Mihir in this serial. I am a rich man's son, a spoilt brat, who loves the good things of life." With best pal Aryan (played by Sanjay Bedi) by his side, he paints the town red. Kshitij believes in love, but Aryan is a playboy. But then, he falls in love with small town girl Gayatri (played by Shraddha Nigam), which shocks Kshitij. "And the story rolls," Amarr adds.
Let's see if it gathers moss.
