Tribute to boatmen
SANJAY NAMBIAR hasn't forgotten his roots though he is well settled in the USA. First he made a documentary on Bharatanatyam and now he is directing his first feature film, Yaanam based on the the last boat journey in the backwaters of Kerala. It is a nostalgic trip for most senior citizens for a time when boats were the sole mode of transport. With the building of roads and the advent of vehicle transport, it sounded the death knell for these boatmen who made a living out of the ancient mode of transport. Sanjay Nambiar wrote a story on this dying profession and decided to pay tribute to those boatmen through celluloid. The protagonists in his story - Damodaran and Bhaskaran - are forced to stop their business. Their boat is making its last journey. Since Damodaran is unwell his son Vasu takes his place in the boat. The boat sails with some very interesting characters - a foreign lady, a priest, a man from the North with shady designs, a widow and her son. Interesting incidents happen and the last journey turns out to be an eventful one. The offbeat venture stars Bhagyam Pillai, Nedumudi Venu and Julia. Some of the folk songs set tune by Radhakrishnan are the highlight.
