`Munnabhai' in Kannada

AFTER THE Telugu and Tamil versions, now Munnabhai MBBS is finding its way to an edition in Kannada with Upendra playing the title role as Uppi Dada M.B.B.S. Produced by Gemini Film Circuit the Kannada version is directed by D. Rajendra Babu. For the director it is like a family affair as besides directing the movie, he is playing a role too with wife Sumitra and daughter Uma sharing the acting honours. Guru is cast as Upendra's trusted deputy. The movie is fast progressing in a 26 day non stop-shooting schedule in Bangalore and Mysore. But there is a hitch in the form of tax rebates. In Karnataka remakes attract full tax if they are made within ten years of the original version's release. They should be either more than ten year old films or should have won a national or State award to enjoy the tax benefits. That is the reason that Dalapati, Annamalai, Nayakan and Swatimutyam took over a decade to appear in Kannada.

That the producers of Uppi... releasing the film on a full tax level, speaks of their confidence.
