Focus on French cinema

Six films by young French directors will be presented at the Trivandrum International Film Festival.

`Read My Lips'

THE 9TH EDITION of Trivandrum International Film Festival, being organised by Chalachithra from July 29, will have a package on French cinema. The focus will be on six films by young French directors. The films being screened include `A Family Affair', `Read My Lips', `Place Vendome', `Save Me', `Replay' and `The Officer's Ward'.

`A Family Affair', by Cedric Klapisch, is a black comedy about a family that has a ritual - every week, the Menard's gather at Henri's café and go on to have dinner. This week, poking fun at each other's sore spots turns out to be main order of business. Henri's wife is about to leave him and others like his sister Betty, brother Philippe, and mother are also disgruntled in their own ways.

`The Officer's Ward'

Cedric Klapisch is known for films that explore ways in which individuals exist in relation to a group of people, whether that group is a family or the denizens of an urban neighborhood, like in his other popular film, `When the Cat's Away'.

In `Read My Lips', a nearly deaf disgruntled secretary, Carla, hires an assistant, Paul, who is a good-looking ex-con. Lonely Carls covers for him, teaches him good manners and uses him to satiate her emotional needs. Paul uses her lip-reading skills to conduct a burglary related to his past. It is a case of good meets bad.

`A Family Affair'

`Place Vendome' is set in the world famous square in Paris by the same name. A jeweller apparently commits suicide. His wife, who used to be in the same business, is now recovering from an illness. She has to find ways of selling some diamonds that were in his possession while keeping other people who are after the stones at bay. Catherine Deneuve stars in the film, directed by Nicole Garcia. Nicole starred in a number of films before making her debut in `Un Weekend Sur Du'. Her second film, `The Favourite Son', earned her a few Cesar nominations.

`Replay' is about two childhood friends - Louis and Nathalie - who fall out owing to Louis obsession with Nathalie. They meet 10 years later and rekindle their friendship. The terms of their relationship have changed though. Nathalie is a successssful actress, something they both had wanted to be. Louis, interested in Nathalie, goes to extraordinary lengths to promote the career of Nathalie, prompting the actress to wonder whether history was repeating itself.

`Save Me'

`Save Me' is set in Roubaix, which is ravaged by unemployment. Here, Agatha meets Mehdi. Their encounter is like a bolt of lightining. Mehdi does not want to part with Agatha. He has never set foot outside Roubaix. He will, at last, take destiny in his own hands.

`The Officer's Ward' is about Adrien Fournier, an engineer, who is injured and his face disfigured during war. Adrien learns to reconcile to his condition and with the help of other patients and staff at the hospital, regains his sense of self-worth. The film is a statement about the horrors of war and the resiliency of human spirit.
