AIDS casting its shadow

Every sixth second a person is affected with HIV /AIDS, which results in over 14,000 new infections on a daily basis, that's the threat of the pandemic globally, said G. Prabhakar, the director of Green Vision, a NGO, engaged in providing care and support system to persons living with HIV and AIDS.

Speaking at a seminar on inter-sectoral collaboration for prevention and control of AIDS, which was hosted by the organisation recently, he stressed that industries and business establishment should not only come out openly to prevent and control the menace of AIDS but also support the affected ones in all possible ways.

According to Dr. Prabhakar, though Green Vision basically concentrates on care and support systems, it would now be focusing on prevention and control also. And to start with, it is targeting the industries and business houses.

"Sensitisation of the industry is a must in today's context. This sector comprises the maximum number of migrant workers who form one among the five high-risk groups. Keeping this in mind we are addressing the industry people to start advocating the cause, otherwise very soon India would overtake Africa in the number of cases," said he.

On how the industry could help, he said, "Through community based programmes industries should make a concerted effort to educate its workers on this topic. Moreover, it should also give the required support to the afflicted ones and not leave them to their fate."

The meeting was addressed by the Regional Manager of The Hindu, T.A. Venkateswaran and senior project manager of PSI, Justin De Normandie.
