Message of peace

Krishna donning the role of Jesus Christ in Shanti Sandesam reminded every one of his excellent portrayal of Alluri Sitaramaraju in the `70s, says Ramesh Susarla

JESUS CHRIST was reborn within three days of crucifixion, but for hero Ghattamaneni Krishna, a native of Burripalem in Guntur district, portraying Jesus Christ was a three-decade-old dream and it has come true with his latest film, Shanti Sandesam.

On a whirlwind tour of Krishna and Guntur districts to gauge the public response to the movie, he enamoured the elite of the Christian community.

If Alluri Seetharamaraju changed fortunes of the Tollywood Superstar, the Shanti Sandesam could prove to be yet another milestone in his career. "A two-minute portrayal as Jesus Christ in Alluri Seetharamaraju had attracted attention of many 30 years ago, but I never got the chance, but with Shanti Sandesam my lifetime dream has been fulfilled," Krishna sounded emotional speaking to members of his fan club at Hotel Vajram Residency in Guntur.

The word about the Superstar's visit spread like wildfire and everyone clamoured for a glance at `the Jesus'.

Success brings with it some headaches also and organizations vied for a prominent slot to put up their banner welcoming and congratulating Krishna leaving bad taste in the mouths of the audience.

A movie on Jesus Christ was nothing new, but a film unit, which had no Christian in it, deserved the accolades they received at the hour-long interactive programme on Thursday. Except for minor deviations from the original Bible for cinematographic effects, the script produced by Maharadhi, received appreciation from the heads of all churches.

Krishna's better half, Vijaya Nirmala, sounded jealous of the director, M.Chandrasekhara Reddy, and producer Mallikarjuna Rao, but the entire unit for sure was enjoying the attention it was receiving from the crowds at the theatres and functions being organised to honour it. For Krishna the journey from Alluri to Jesus had been quite a long one with very few box-office hits to his credit compared to his compatriots.
