Shape up in 30-minutes

Figurz is an innovative `30-minute fitness' studio designed exclusively for women

MANY WOMEN are jogging to the gym today realising the power of regular workouts to beat osteoporosis, PMS and even stress. Also, a half an hour of good workout would release enough feel good neurotransmitters akin to biting into a bar of chocolate. But there are a few deterrents, like the 9 a.m.— 11 a.m.; 3 p.m.— 5 p.m. only women hours, especially when you are working or have to attend to children after school. And if you plan to workout during the men's hours, changing heavy weights takes most of the precious time so also waiting in the queue to do your reps. Not forgetting oversized uncomfortably adjusted chairs.

Well, hope is round the corner, Figurz, the new fitness centre for women in town. It has two USPs. One, the equipment is ergonomically designed for women and the 30-minute regime packs in cardio and strength training, for the pressed-for-time folks. With no weights to adjust, easy to use equipment along with a lilac and pink ambience with motivational frames sure makes for a pleasant fitness schedule. "I am from Hyderabad and found that such a concept was lacking in the twin cities. The concept is very popular in the West, and we are introducing it for the first time in Asia. It is based on the hydraulic resistance concept. It's safe for teenagers and older women," says US-based Nina Appadurai, CEO Figurz.

Hydraulic resistance circuit training, like swimming, adapts to individual levels of fitness. Its tad different when compared to ones offered at conventional gym or aerobic studios around. In a conventional gym, you move from multi station to floor exercises, do a few dumbbell sets and treadmill as part of your day's workout. Here, you do a couple of circuits spending a few seconds moving on each of the twenty stations--equipment for toning waist, abdomens, thighs, obliques and biceps, alternating with step, jogging, and more cardio stations. A pre-programmed prompt with music requests the member to change station after a few minutes. Two circuits and your workout is through, the amount of calories burnt depends on your endurance.

"One has to maintain a particular pulse rate for a said time for the impact, that's the key idea for the weight loss agenda here. We would show them how to monitor their pulse rate as well. The results will show in six weeks. There is no water or muscle loss, but of fat. And we do not advise them to diet but to go easy on sweets and fats. And break up the meals into smaller meals. The idea is to keep the blood sugar levels constant so that you don't succumb to hunger pangs and dash for anything at your side," says Nina.

Figurz (58 & 59, Nagarjuna Hills, TEL: 55683477/78/79) is open seven days a week, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., with tariffs ranging from Rs. 3,000 per month to Rs. 14, 000 for six months. Nina also plans to introduce Pilates at the fitness centre as well as take the concept to go to other metros in the country. Drop in at the centre to know more but in the arduous battle against the bulge, the ninety nine per cent perspiration and one per cent inspiration adage, sure seems apt.
