She often sported personally designed multi coloured body suits, several inches long painted finger nails, and one legged leotards during practice. "Looking good is as important as running well," she used to say.

AL OERTER who won the discuss throw in four Olympic Games, started his gold winning spree at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956. He repeated the feat at Rome in 1960. During his third attempt at the Tokyo Olympics he suffered a dislocated cervical vertebra and a torn cartilage in his rib cage. But he defied the pain to win the gold again. He said later "This is the Olympic Games! One should be prepared to die for a medal." Later he won his fourth gold in 1972 before retiring. He is now an accomplished abstract painter!

CUBA HAS produced some of the best amateur boxers in the world. One of the most accomplished was heavyweight Teofilo Stevenson. During a remarkable career he won three Olympic gold medals. He received offers from boxing promoters to turn professional and compete with top ranked professional boxers for millions of dollars. But he preferred to stay loyal to the principles of amateur sports. "I have the love and respect of millions of my countrymen. That is all I need," he told them.
