Schools beware!

THE RECENT fire accident in a school at Kumbakonam in which several young students lost their lives has left parents in the city a worried lot. Their unease is quite understandable given the fact that several schools here too operate in conditions similar to the one, which went up in fire like a tinder box in Tamil Nadu the other day.

Fire safety is one aspect that hardly gets the needed attention in schools despite the fact that children, who are hardly prepared to handle contingencies, fill the premises.

Incidentally, institutions that collect huge amounts from students in the name of building funds and for providing other facilities , pay scant attention when it comes to providing safe and better environs for the young children.

Will the tragedy of Kumbakonam act as an eye opener for the authorities?
