Perfect super hero film

Spider-Man 2 (English)

Cast: Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst

Director: Sam Raimi

WHEN SPIDER-MAN swung to the theatres in 2002, it marked the birth of the angst-ridden superhero and we were burdened with solemn, gloomy supermen who would give Hamlet a run for his money with their cogitations of life, the universe and everything.

Spidey director, Sam Raimi, who made his mark in Hollywood with the cult campy horror movie Evil Dead, however has the formula down pat. While social historians held forth on theories attributing the success of Spider-Man to post 9/11 America, (Superman is how America would like to be and Spider-Man is what America actually is), the bottom line is Raimi served a delicious cocktail of mind-altering stunts with a strong core of emotion.

Spidey's alter ego Peter Parker is someone we all can relate to. Peter is late for everything - from college to rent to Mary Jane's play. The love of Peter's life, Mary Jane, has given up waiting for Peter and moved on, becoming an actress and engaged to be married to the local hero. Peter's best friend Harry Osborn is obsessed with avenging his father's death.

Just as Peter visits a therapist as he has trouble performing as Spider-Man and decides he would be Spider-Man no more, Doc Ock, a brilliant scientist, holds the city in his multi-tentacled grip. There are scenes, which are vintage Raimi including the experiment that goes horribly wrong and hospital sequence. The single set piece atop the train is more than paisa vasool. And fans of Raimi's campy Greek television series Xena: Warrior Princess will recognise Joxer (Ted Raimi).

Tobey Maguire is a perfect cast as the vulnerable everyman as superhero and the supporting cast - most of them reprising their roles, are beyond competent. While the action set pieces give a major adrenalin kick, the quiet oases of peace and conversation, as we get to know more about the characters are more than welcome.

The movie with its bright colours, wonderful in-jokes (the Spider-Man song and the discussion on a super hero's sartorial choices are delicious examples) breathtaking action and solid performances comfortably translate into the perfect blockbuster.
