DID YOU KNOW?

VERY LITTLE is known of the Indian athlete Norman Pritchard who won two silver medals in the 1900 Paris Games. He picked up the silver in the 200 m and 200 m hurdles. He is believed to have gone to Hollywood to act in silent movies later on.

THE STANDING jumps were introduced at the 1900 Paris Olympic Games. The great Ray Ewry (USA) made his debut in these Games. He won three gold in 1900 and by the time he ended his career in 1908 he had won ten gold medals from four Olympics. Ewry was a victim of polio as a child and it was feared he would become paralysed for life. But he exercised to become strong enough to be one of the best in standing jumps.

THE MAN who stunned the spectators was an American Indian by the name of Irving Baxter. Competing in high jump, Baxter's technique was unique. He just dived over the bar in the manner of a diver in the swimming pool. This was successful and he won the title clearing 1.90 metres.

TWO GAMES, soccer and cricket were introduced in Paris. Cricket, popular in Britain and her ex-colonies, especially in the Indian sub-continent, was discontinued after these Games. Britain won the title and so also the soccer crown.
