FEAR is the KEY

Unexplained fears or phobias about strange things are common and need a great deal of self-help as treatment.

Y*OU WAKE up in the morning with this inexplicable fear, terror, panic that gnaws into you. It may be due to a seminar, an exam, or a speech etc. The fear is severe and difficult to control. Each time something like this happens your anxiety increases manifold. You want to escape, scream, hide and run away from the situation. This is a horrifying state of affairs. You could be suffering from some kind of phobia.

A phobia is something you fear to the extent that it interferes with your normal behaviour. These are not mere trepidations but are severe, irrational fears. You could have a fear of open places, of reptiles, of height, of blood, of water etc. If this is not treated it can be devastating and affect professional as well as personal life. Women are presumably easier prey to phobias.

Types of phobias.

Claustrophobia: It is a morbid fright of an enclosed space like an elevator or a closed room. This can be due to some upsetting experience in childhood. People with claustrophobia feel a sense of apprehension in crowded buses, in a car or in a plane. They experience clamminess, sweating, palpitation and other kinds of uneasiness.

Agoraphobia: It is the reverse of claustrophobia. Agora in Greek means a market place, thus the word means a fear of open place. Around 60 per cent of phobic cases are agoraphobics. It is more common among women. People with this phobia prefer to stay shut in their homes. They are panic stricken in places like open fields, marriages, markets etc. Depression develops in severe cases and there are chances of alcohol or drug abuse.

Social phobia: It is being tormented by excessive self-consciousness, an overwhelming fear of embarrassment, of scrutiny in public or in any social atmosphere. This can be devastating and may result in fear of speaking at formal gatherings.

Acrophobia: It is a gruesome fear of height and high places. People with this kind of fear experience vertigo as they look at a spectacular view or when they look below and realise that they are at a height.

Fear of public speaking: This is similar to the stage fright and performance angst we experience in our school days. This can be due to a previous fearful incident.

Some of the phobias can be treated if we put in a little effort from our side.

Divert your thoughts by involving in some exercises. Learn relaxing techniques. Try and break the vicious cycle that enhances the phobia. Try counselling with friends and family members. Add a dash of effort and loads of determination to your daily life because only you can eradicate the phobia. Desensitise yourself by reducing the anxiety in phobic situations.
