India's performance in Athens Olympics 2004
THOUGH MORE medals were not won at the Athens Olympics, Indian contingent has performed fairly well. Indians have got fourth to sixth places in many events. With more hard work and a little luck, we can hope that the country's sports persons will get more medals at Beijing.
S. Kannan,
Uyyakondan Thirumalai.
WE ARE suppose to be happy that one of us had The Steely Resolve to taste the success. In spite of this we know that there is a big gap between a cup and lip. So India must make more efforts to get more medals in the next Olympic.
C. Saravana Kumar,
Tiruchi - 10.
INDIA'S RECORD dismal sports scenario at the Olympics in terms of medals won, leaves much to be desired. When countries like China, Japan, Korea can excel why cannot India? Tennis and Hockey could not beget medals after loud statements. The immense hardship in the beginning of their career without modern training facilities, poor coaching, without sponsorship is a painful struggle. Sponsors are willing to grease cricket crazy Indians every year and neglect the importance of Athletics, other games or training facilities till the next Olympics. India's performance at the Olympics was on predictable lines.
David Peniel, Tiruchi.
IT IS high time for us to learn a lot of lessons. When populated countries like China can do wonders, why not India shine in the field of sports? India must take measures to bring out the hidden talents and skills of youngsters at school and college level by motivating them and imparting training by expert coaches, definitely more laurels can be achieved. The participants must have the enthusiasm, determination and the spirit of sportsmanship burning within there, certainly India can do wonders in sports activities.
Rita Shantha Kumar,
Tiruchi.
WE THE Indians lack sports spirit and this has reflected in almost all the sports competitions held so far. The last minute hurry in all the sports conducted in the past had lead to the failure of Indians in all competitions. The sports people who were showing high popularity in the country had shown sorry figure in the Athens Olympics 2004. "Try and fail" that is different but the failure without trial itself cannot be forgiven. Such failures in the Olympics will lead to suspicion in the minds of the public about the selection of the sports persons whether any politics is involved or not.
G. Rajesh Gopal, Tiruchi.
FIRST OF all, we need a system to reach the top of the world. We need a common sports agenda, throughout the nation. The residential coaching programme for boys and girls in the age of 6 plus will produce world class performance when they attain age of 15 plus. Select some specific game (may be mind related activity) and focus the training. This will produce result. Don't blame the athletes or association. It is a national problem. The parents must come forward to put their children in some game.
N.S. Sivakumar, Tiruchi.
SINCE, 1920 the country with a 100 crore people has only managed to get 15 medals. This reveals the pathetic state of affairs prevailing in Indian sports. A strong 75 athelete squad unsurprisingly was outclassed in all the events and brought just one medal and that too a silver. India's performance at Athens exhibits lack of infrastructure, training facilities, long term planning, fitness. We are front-runner in all the progressive fields like Nuclear technology, space programme, economy and dot-com revolution. Then why should we leave sports behind? Medals are not miracles that can happen. We should not sit as relaxed as poached-egg on toast. We have to make them happen by determination and hard work.
B. Manoj Kumar, M.K. Kottai.
INSTEAD OF throwing bitter criticism against Indian contingent, let us encourage them for what they have performed. The personal best of 6.85 m by Anju B.George was not better enough to fetch us a medal. Still, It should not fade away unnoticed. The encomiums we shower upon Major Rathore or anyone for that matter would definitely be a motivating factor for all the other aspirants who have queued up for the next Olympics. Let us stop criticising them curtly and start complimenting them constructively for what they are and what they are capable of. Let us not discourage them instead dissect to probe into the cause for our failures and probable remedies.
Hilda Lawrence, Tiruchi.
INDIA'S PERFORMANCE in Athens has been a complete fiasco. Hats off to Rathore for his efforts in winning silver. Indian Olympic association should do serious introspection in this regard, otherwise our country's future will be at stake.
M.R. Nagarajamani, Tiruchi.
INDIAN SPORTSPERSONS need to practice in a harder way. Eventhough, many sportspersons reach the finals in Athens, they could not be among the medal winners, due to lack of adequate practice and exposure.
M.A.S. Mohamed Nizamudeen,
Tiruchi.
THE ATHENS Olympics has thrown up yet another opportunity for introspection and course correction. Physical education should be made compulsory from elementary schools level, scientific coaching and training should be made available, infrastructure towards this has to be provided for all schools and spotting the talent at early stage and special training is to be provided for potential candidates.
G.S.N. Murthy, Tiruchi.
PEOPLE DO not give any importance to sports activities except cricket. Games are to be made compulsory from primary school to college. Incentives are to be offered to students who evince interest in sports. Politics should never be allowed to play a role in selection of players. All infrastructure facilities should be provided at taluk levels.
A. Joseph Selvaraj,
Manapparai.
THOUGH MANY reasons could be attributed to a debacle at Athens I think proper unbiased expert coaching by star coaches, trainers would go a long way to redress India's utter failure. A healthy atmosphere for the budding atheletes would certainly heal the wound and injury that India had succumbed to at Athens.
R. Lalitha, Tiruchi.
BEING AN ardent aficionado, I feel crestfallen at India's lackluster performance in Athens. It is certainly, an ignominy to our country which is boastful of marching towards the developed nation status. Both the associations and players are responsible for the abysmal performance. Expressing chagrin at our pathetic status in the Olympics has become a formality. Unfortunately, the parents and many schools believe, that acquiring bookish knowledge is the only tool to achieve success in life. They turn a Nelson eye to the tangible fact, that sports can be a lucrative profession through which the glory and money that a successful player gets can be tantamount to the glory and money that the successful scholar gets. There cannot be dearth of talent in our country. We should be adept enough to adopt the strategy of China in elevating the standard of sports from nadir to Zenith.
S. Sayiram, Tiruchi.
OUR PARLIAMENTARIANS have time and energy only to fight with each other and to stall the proceedings of the houses. Where is the time and mind for them to focus on Olympics for our country's victory? Unless the Government identifies and motivate the sportsmen well in advance, the poor performance will only get repeated in future also.
K.S. Ramanathan,
Srirangam.
