Beating boredom

K. JESHI

If you are feeling listless, just sweat it out and beat boredom blues

HOW OFTEN do you say, "I'm bored to death"? If the answer is `Often', read on.

"Boredom is a normal human experience and getting bored in isolation is a passing phenomenon. When it becomes perpetual and there is distinctive impairment in day-to-day activities in terms of output at work and getting along with friends and colleagues psychiatric intervention is required," says K. Selvaraj, a consultant psychiatrist. But there are ways to escape the constricting walls of this personal prison called boredom. The state of the mind is determined by three dimensions — work, love and play. "Play is always underplayed. It fails to get the attention it deserves," Selvaraj adds. The solution is not to eliminate things from life. If one is good at cricket, carry on with it. When bored later in life, one can go back to it. Otherwise, life could be one big yawn.
