Go devotional

The `Best of Meera Bhajans' is for those who like devotional music.

Best of Meera Bhajans: Sa Re Ga Ma, Rs. 76

THE BHAJANS - 12 in all, six each on side A and B - contained in this Sa Re Ga Ma cassette are gems. And the list of singers who have rendered these soulful bhajans reads like who's who of Indian classical music.

Singers

Besides the inimitable M. S. Subbulakshmi, we have Pandit D. V. Paluskar, Pandit Jasraj, Pandit Kumar Gandharva, Kishori Amonkar and of course, Lata Mangeshkar.

Side A begins appropriately with an MS rendition, More to Girdhar Gopal... . One might have heard it any number of times but it can still weave magic.

It is a beautiful bhajan where one can feel Meera perceiving Lord Krishna as a friend, lover and the ultimate in her life. The total devotion of Meera to the Lord has been brought out brilliantly by MS, such is the latter's devotion!

The next song, Payo Ji Maine Ramratan... , by Pandit Paluskar, is an absolute delight. There is an indescribable beauty in his voice.

Even those uninitiated into Hindustani classical music can appreciate its singular majesty. The other songs on side A include Piyaji Mhare Naina... and Sakhi Mori Nind ... by Pandit Kumar Gandharva and Vasundhara Komkali, Chakar Rakho Ji... by MS, and Hari Bin Kun Gati Meri... by Lata Mangeshkar.

Stunning bhajan

Side B opens with Mharo Pranam Bankhe Bihari Ki... , the only bhajan of Kishori Amonkar that has been included in this cassette.

Hers is another voice that can cast a spell on anyone. There is a certain poise in her voice; it can traverse high pitch notes with ease. One is actually tempted to rate this bhajan as the pick of the cassette.

Other songs include Chalo Man Ganga... by Pandit Paluskar, MS's Pag Ghungroo... , Jasraj's Mai Sanware... , and Mhara Olagiya... by Kumar Gandharva.

The last offering is the famous Chala Vahi Des... by Lata Mangeshkar.

This cassette is one of the better offerings by Sa Re Ga Ma. Though it is priced at Rs.76, it is definitely worth a buy.
