Hits bull's eye

QUIZZING IS his obsession and he knows where and when to strike to make it to the top. Khaja Abdul Moin Baig of Sri Chaitanya College exhibited an outstanding presence of mind, sharpness in answering questions and taking on the challenge of the all-important buzzer round in the most confident and the smartest way. Focused training for hisfavourite buzzer round, indeed, paid dividends. Leader of the winning team at The Hindu Young World Quiz Competition-2004 in Vijayawada on Friday, victory for the team was a culmination of one year's efforts. Winner of the event's 2002 Vijayawada Regional round, he had failed to make it to the final six teams last year. But his determination to be there in the National Finals in 2004 at Bangalore saw him through the regional finals. "Only when we aim for the higher one, we can cross the smaller hurdles," he observed. The agility of Abdul's performance was applauded when he completed a question and answered it too, immediately after the name of Anne Frank slipped the lips of the quizmaster. "The question is where she wrote her diary and the answer is Amsterdam," he said with staunch confidence leaving the audience amazed.

Busy preparing for the Engineering entrance test next year and the Intermediate final examinations, he, along with his teammate and classmate Saikrishna, was one of the six finalist teams. "We were the best prepared team today, that does not mean others were mediocre. In The Hindu Young World Quiz one who scores in the buzzer round, ultimately wins," Baig felt. Avid follower of `University Challenge' quiz on the BBC, he learns current affairs through The Hindu daily newspaper and a couple of other channels. Goaded into quizzing by his father, Md. Abdul Gaffar Baig, with the advent of the Kaun Banega Karodpathi, he manages to watch Discovery and a couple of music channels, besides all English and Hindi movies screened in Vijayawada. Sai Krishna, an authority on comics, cartoon serials, Harry Potter and all such children's stuff was the right partner for him.
