Puppet power: tool of communication
IT HAS been treated more as a juvenile form of entertainment in villages and small towns. But puppetry is much more than that. An art, which has been on the wane, it can be developed and used effectively to teach and communicate. It can make a classroom come alive and stimulate the creative abilities of the children. The teachers can adapt a story to include a puppet or just tell the story with them. Besides, it can be made with any material that your imagination can come up with. There are hand puppets, rod puppets or stick puppets, one to five finger puppets, shadow puppets, glove puppets, string puppets, box puppets and many more.
The centre for Training and Resources in Early Childhood Education is organising two puppet workshops for adults. The first one will be held from September 22 to 25 (1.30 to 4.30 p.m.) at Aarambh, old no. 59 and new no. 125, T. Nagar. The second workshop is from September 27 to 29 (9.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.). The venue is The Children Garden School Society, 11/12, 7th lane, R.K. Salai, Mylapore.
All materials to make the puppets will be provided, including a booklet on puppet making. The registration fee is Rs.1000. For details call 26162403.
