Beauty pageants: yardstick for woman's self-worth?
Rooted in health
I consider beauty a component of holistic health of an individual, be it a man or woman. Beauty pageants are not necessarily a yardstick to measure a woman's self-worth. Our perspective on beauty itself has to change. A woman's personality, knowledge, intelligence and charisma all these put together is beauty. Beauty has deeper meaning. Beauty is rooted in health physical, mental and spiritual. In my opinion beauty helps to build self-confidence, self-esteem and a positive attitude in a woman. Pageants may motivate women to look their best. One has to be fit and maintain personal hygiene, as our body is the place where the atma or the soul dwells. Those who vehemently oppose beauty pageants, I am sure, also visit parlours, go to gyms to workouts, select a matching blouse for the sari and wear a suitable tie for the shirt. The urge to look good is inherent in every individual; only the degree varies. But if importance is given only to looks and other components are ignored in a beauty pageant, then I am not
for it.
