Beauty pageants: yardstick for woman's self-worth?
Extremely demoralising
Defining a woman's self worth by a beauty pageant reinforces every myth and stereotype of how a woman should look and behave. Besides, judging persons by appearances is extremely superficial, so how can it enhance self worth? Since beauty pageants have lost their importance in the West, its marketers have turned to countries in the Third World. It is largely driven by its marketers and it is unfortunate that even in small towns, nowadays, all kinds of pageants have sprung up. These in turn encourage young people to judge their self worth only by their appearance, which can be extremely demoralising. Instead of looking at path breakers and achievers in diverse fields we have come to a stage where beauty queens have become role models. The media is not without blame for it has also encouraged this hype.
