Lesser evils

YOU MIGHT know by now that one out of every five deaths in India is caused by tobacco abuse. Almost five million people in the world die from smoking-related diseases annually. In India, this year around 8,00,000 people, 80 per cent of them poor, will lose their lives to tobacco related diseases. This is just a glimpse of the havoc tobacco is causing in the lives of the people.

Those who have tried hard to quit the use of tobacco products, but could not because of dependence, now have an option to reduce their chances of falling prey to diseases caused by smoking or chewing tobacco. Dalmia Consumer Care has come up with a range of non-tobacco products like Vardan Bidi and Chabaazaa gum, said to be a relatively safer alternative to ordinarybidis and pan masalas.

According to the Managing Director of the company, "Nicotine addiction is more severe than cocaine, heroin or marijuana addiction. In such situations quitting is not a solution as people revert to the habits of smoking and chewing. Vardan and Chabaazaa provide them with reasonable alternatives, which are comparatively safe."

Wonder plants

Vardan is a mix of tulsi, neem, jamun, and three other natural plants; these are then specially treated without chemicals. These natural ingredients are incidentally in queue to be patented. It is free of tobacco, nicotine and other carcinogens found otherwise in tobacco, claims the company. .

As for Chabaaza, it is a chewing gum with Indian pan flavour and eliminates all the harmful ingredients of pan masala, like areca nut, magnesium carbonate or gambier but retains the granular feel of pan masala. It is available in pan and kattha (gambier) flavours.

Smoking, according to the World Health Organisation, causes lung cancer, heart diseases and 15 other types of medical problems including hairloss, cataract, stomach ulcers, infertility, inflammation of arteries, veins and other dreadful diseases. Chewing, on the other hand, causes burning, oral cancer, ulcers and other mouth-related diseases.
