TODAY SOUND and audiography play an important role in the commercial success of a film. Deepan Chatterji, the sound specialist who won the National award last year for the Bengali film "Bhalo Theko", said: "Today with the advent of DTS and multiplexes, the sound and the ambience in a film have become very important. Many of the recent hits had sound designers who made the films real on the screen with the right background and effects." Chatterji who operates out of director Priyadashan's Four Frames sound company, started his career as a pianist to the late legendary music director Rahul Dev Burman. They experimented with sound (Remember the coin falling effect in "Sholay"?) and slowly Chatterji became an expert in sound editing. He has lost count of the number of films he has done [in eight languages], as he has seen the evolution of sound from analogue to digital.
