* Suresh Chand Chordia wanted to know if he could get training to run a fast food restaurant. He can contact the Food Processing Training Centre (FPTC). Classes are held on weekdays and also on Saturdays and Sundays. There's a special batch in the evenings for working people. Address: FPTC, Plot No. 6, 17 A, Gugan Street, West Kamakodi Nagar, Valasaravakkam, ph: 24864733.

* Rohini Chitnis wanted to know if the silver foil, which is used on sweets, is pure veg. Ramesh Chordia (ramesh@karunaclub.com) informs her that the silver foil used for edible purposes is called varakh. If you observe it under a microscope, you might see traces of cattle blood. To prepare varakh, intestines of cattle are obtained from the slaughterhouse. Before handing over the intestines, they are washed in the slaughterhouse. Intestines are cut into small pieces and then are bound together. A silver block is placed in the middle of these bound intestines, and the whole thing is placed in a leather bag and sealed. The bag is then pounded with wooden sticks, till it flattens. The silver block by this time turns into foil. This foil is separated from the intestine pack and placed on a paper. This is varakh. Even staunch vegetarians, unknowingly consume this as part of sweets, pan and arecanut. The reason behind using the intestines of the cattle for preparing the varakh is because of the elasticity of the intestines. This information was published in the magazine Beauty without cruelty and also discussed in Maneka Gandhi's television show, "Heads and Tails."
