A toast to the Mahatma?
|
Gandhi Jayanthi. One public holiday on which you won't hear boisterous cheers as beer mugs clink together. The one day you'll actually notice that someone has passed out on the pavement before you gingerly avoid stepping over him. The day drinkers might wonder why they feel a pang of guilt as they down another shot of whiskey. What do people in the Pub City do on the day they're forced to be sober (even when they're not driving), because the law deems that all liquor shops, pubs and bars close shutters on October 2? Can Gandhi take away our tourist attraction? Or is October 1 the day to stock up, so you can hiccup the next? ROHINI MOHAN finds out if our citizens care to be one-day teetotallers.

Bangalore's pubs are tourist attractions. It's because more people have more money that they don't know how to spend. So they drink it away. And the Government also supports liquor shops, so what's the point?
Zafarullah Khan, driver
Saturday is a day to relax for so many of us working professionals. Whatever the reason, they shouldn't closepubs on weekends. That's all I care about.
Debojit, banker
Gandhi didn't say, `Keep off alcohol for only one day'. We just turned his advice around to suit our needs. If we really respected the man, we would not drink on any day. October 2 is just a show.
Akruti, tourist
They should close pubs on more days than once a year. We can keep off liquor for ourselves also, no? Why only for Gandhi? It'll be like a fast that cleanses your body. Vasanthi Raju, singer Saturday is a day to relax for so many of us working professionals. Whatever the reason, they shouldn't close pubs on weekends. That's all I care about.
Vasanthi Raju, Singer
Why only on that day? There should be strict time restrictions for pubs and liquor shops on all days. If they decide to close down pubs forever, I'll be the first to endorse that.
Payal, engineering student
Such rules are so useless. OK, a great man was born and we must celebrate it. But for one person, why should we stop the enjoyment of others?
Arindam, III year
journalism student
Having one dry day a year has no effect. If people want to drink, they can drink anywhere. As if they can't buy booze on October 1 and drink at home! Nobody can stop them.
Abhishek, software engineer
People drink on Independence day itself, so what's a Gandhi Jayanthi?! Fine, it's a mark of respect. But Gandhi also did Dandi March. So shall we all walk all over town on October 2?
Lopa, corporate employee
Oh? Pubs close on October 2?! Oh no! Now what to do on hat day? Ya, OK, he's the father of the nation, no? What to do? It's a patriotic kinda thing, I suppose.
