Iran unveiled
From the film "Kandahar"
THIS TIME it's a festival of Iranian films focussing on children, women and Afghan-related issues. Organised by the Tamil Nadu Thiraippada Iyakkam, the festival titled "Beyond the Veil" will be held on October 4, 5 and 6 at the South Indian Film Chamber Theatre, 6.15 p.m. onwards daily.
On October 4, you can watch "Children of Heaven" and "Baran" directed by Majid Majidi. "Children of Heaven" revolves round Ali and his sister Zahra. When Ali loses his sister's school shoes, they hatch a plan to stay out of trouble. They share his shoes and keep it a secret from their parents. But what turns out is a funny, heart-warming adventure.
"Baran" is a humorous as well as a poignant love story with several interesting twists and turns, what with a man turning out to be a woman in disguise and more.
On October 5, "Leila" directed by Dariush Mahrujui and "Circle" by Safar Panahi will be screened. Set in contemporary Teheran, "Leila" revolves round a happily married but childless couple. Leila and Reza are persuaded by Reza's mother to perpetuate the family name. Reza refuses to remarry, but his mother cajoles Leila into submission.
"Circle" is about three women and their struggle for survival against bureaucracy and inequalities.
On October 6, "Kandahar" by Mohsen Makhmalbaf and "Osama" by Siddiq Barijak will be screened. "Kandahar" is about a family which has fled Afghanistan to Canada, accidentally leaving behind their small daughter, who loses her legs to a landmine. Years later, she sends a mail to her sister, Nafas, now a reporter in Canada, saying that she has decided to commit suicide. Whether Nafas saves her sister or not forms the rest of the plot.
"Osama" is inspired by a real life incident and is also the first film made in Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban. A 12-year-old girl and mother find themselves on the brink of starvation. The mother, fearing opposition from the Taliban, disguises her daughter as a boy called Osama. The young girl embarks on a terrifying but confusing journey as she tries to keep the Taliban from discovering her true identity.
