Tackling autism

An interactive seminar titled "Insight into autism" will be held on October 17

AUTISM IS a baffling brain disorder, the incidence of which is rapidly increasing in the country. It poses a challenge, especially here, as the infrastructure needed to tackle the problem is lacking.

To present a complete perspective on autism to medical and allied medical professionals and parents of autistic children, DOAST, in association with some of the leading special schools in the city such as Sankalp, Swabodhini, V. Excel and Vidyasagar, is organising a one-day interactive seminar titled "Insight into autism" on October 17, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Valliammal College Auditorium, Second Avenue, Anna Nagar East.

DOAST is a research centre run by Dr. N. P. Karthikeyen, a leading ENT surgeon. The centre treats children suffering from autism spectrum disorders with an integrated therapy module. It is also involved in the process of developing a therapeutic protocol for autism using traditional Indian medical drugs and therapeutic practices. The centre is located at 6, Kellys Road, Kilpauk, ph: 52026688.

The seminar is aimed at improving the quality of life of autistic children by imparting knowledge and promoting networking among professionals and service providers involved in this field. It is perhaps for the first time that medical experts involved in this field from the Child's Trust Hospital, SRMC Porur, Vijaya Hospital and Sundaram Medical Foundation will be getting together on the same platform to share their knowledge and experience. Registration is mandatory and the fee is Rs. 200. For details call 26261533.
