Simply TABU!

She is as spontaneous off-screen as she is on-screen. RANA SIDDIQUI in a chat with Tabu

MATTERS OF THE MIND: Tabu

FRIDAY AFTERNOON. And Tabu has just finished her zuhar namaz (day time prayer). Only after that will she go about her routine. She observed shab-e-baraat on Thursday too. And she offered shab-e-qadr prayer that night, a night, which is considered pious. Tabu observes namaz in salwar-kameez and then changes into a pair of jeans and kurta. She does not care about appearing without make-up.

She can impress one with her warm reception, soft demeanour, coy gestures, boisterous laugh, spontaneous response and simplicity. None of these qualities seem to be acquired.

Tabu has managed to carve a niche for herself in the Hindi filmdom. This space is not a result of a well-planned career, but "a by-product" of the kind of work she has done. tm11goodtase

Meaningful cinema

"Recently, somebody told me that I am clever and smart, for I did everything that I wanted and still was able to create a brand equity. I was amazed to hear this because I never chose specific films thinking it would give me a status that I have earned now. But it is true that the choice of films was completely mine. If they proved to be substantial and intelligent, that is incidental. In fact, the position that I have achieved through them has proved to be a little too much to handle," says Tabu.

So much that she is labelled as unapproachable and even arrogant at times.

This impression, says Tabu, could be because people think she is intellectual. And this is something that irritates Tabu. It has made her quite media shy.

She has been reserved "since childhood." "It is ingrained into my temperament. These days, media trappings are more than it used to be earlier. Now you have to give bytes to all kinds of media, look presentable all the time, and I can't do that. If I had my way, I would prefer to talk to select media persons. Now, since I have come a long way, I am trying to take it easy."

Tabu will play the lead role in the debut directorial venture of Zoya, lyricist Javed Akhtar's daughter. The shooting will begin in February next year. Mention to her that Amitabh Bachchan finds her "a challenging actress" and that he "would like to work with her" and Tabu says, "It will be an honour for me to work with him. I look forward to doing a film with him."

And there is one more thing she is looking forward to. The month of Ramzan starting from mid-October.
