See Bollywood sites in ... Hong Kong!

OTHER COUNTRIES will now probably enjoy spin-offs generated by the world's largest film industry — Bollywood. Hong Kong for one has been quick to latch on to India's big money machine by linking its tourism directly to Bollywood, hoping to ensnare both Indian travellers as well as big-budget producers hunting for exotic foreign locations.

Bollywood and the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) are travel-trade partners and Hong Kong is positioning itself as a country similar to India, both in its colonial background and for its repute as an international film production centre. HKTB describes Hong Kong as the Hollywood of the East for its "exotic sights and fascinating fusion of East and West" and India is, of course, home to Bollywood. The tourism board believes that this movie-making linkage provides a real business opportunity with surveys revealing that 14 per cent of the visitors to Hong Kong are interested in its movie scenes and the promotions built around them.

The promotions include a special "movie map" marking out the places in Hong Kong where Bollywood movies have been shot, special photo shoots with Bollywood stars, special TV programmes hosted by them and so on. Visitors are expected to be attracted by Hong Kong's glamour, lifestyle, culture and movie locations where they can eat and drink in the same place as the stars.

The tourism board also unveiled its fourth Best of the Best Culinary Awards to "reinforce the city's standing as the culinary capital of Asia," said Clara Chong, Executive Director HKTB. The awards also afford business opportunities for the catering and tourism industries, allowing visitors to join gourmet tours to sample the award-winning dishes.
