Monopoly Raj?
NON-KANNADA FILMS seem to have no takers in cinemas in Karnataka. Fifty days into the ban on other language film releases, and the Karnataka Government has lost nearly Rs. 16 crores by way of entertainment tax, as 34 non-Kannada films could not be released. Last week, Kamal Hassan's "Vasoolraja MBBS" was released in Bangalore, 50 days after its worldwide release, to empty houses, as most have seen it on CD! The Telugu film "Naa Autograph" had to be discontinued due to lack of audience! Meanwhile, Kannada films are reaping the harvest and the industry is buoyed by the recent success of films such as "Apthamitra", "Omkara" and "Sahukara". "Apthamitra" has made a distributor's share of Rs. 2.16 crores in 35 days from Bangalore, Kolar and Tumkur area.
