An air of festivity prevailed at the Viswapriya function hall on the Beach Road for four days recently. The festival atmosphere was ushered in by the State Bank of India as part of its `Maha Utsav' organised to disburse loans for purchase of houses and cars. When a bank comes calling giving loans at reduced rates of interest, can borrowers resist the offer? They made a beeline to the utsav to make hay while the sun shines.
Thousands of people thronged the venue and during the four-day festival. The various branches of the bank set up help desks at the venue to cater for the borrowers under their jurisdiction. The documents of the borrowers were verified on the spot saving them the trouble of running from pillar to post for the sanction of loans.
The bank had accorded sanctions for disbursal of loans amounting to not one or two crores but... hold your breath... Rs.136 crores. Seventy per cent of the loans were towards housing. While borrowers had every reason to be happy about the speedy clearance, their spouses and children who accompanied them had a good time going around the stalls set up by various companies displaying their products and services. The musical programmes organised by the event managers, Razzmatazz, enlivened the evenings. The `tall man' walking on sticks and artistes dressed as cartoon characters provided wholesome entertainment to children.
