Time to rock `n' roll: At Underground 2004. Pic. by Vino John
HERE, EVEN noise gets an award. That is, if you're the noisiest member of the crowd. You will be crowned with the title `Enthu Patani' - and your `noisy' mouth will be stuffed with a box of chocolates. The `funkiest pair of jeans', or whatever that means, will fetch a pair of socks. And it pays to be grumpy as well. The one with `the Smallest Smile', which translates as `The Grumpiest Person', will get something to chew on - actually, a box of chews.
This is Underground 2004 for you. Funky, funny and absolutely in-the-face! The annual college music festival got going on October 1 at the Unwind Center's basement, with eight bands and four soloists battling it out in the light music category. Percussionist Murali and music director Rehaana judged the performances.
And on October 8, college students attempted to create music with nothing but their mouths. The acoustic and a cappella competition witnessed over-enthusiastic contestants or "enthu patanis" overshoot the time limit. And the seats were taken mostly by college students who had come to cheer their classmates. Friendly jeers and comments filled the air.
After cooing Jambalaya, Bob (accompanied on the acoustic guitar by Akash), wanted to sing one more number. "Do I have enough time for one more song?" A voice answered, "Go ahead, you have two more minutes."
A second later, another gruff voice was heard: "No. Your time is up!" When it dawned on the audience that someone had impersonated the time-keeper, they broke into a hearty laughter.
When it was MOP Vaishnav's turn to go a cappella, one was surprised to see a jumbo team on stage. Ten smiling girls from the college sang in one voice, "I'll Follow Him".
During a short break, Nikhil Cherian of Garage Monsters sang "I Miss You", before explaining, "I have been singing this song in my mind for the last three months when I was away from my girlfriend. I now dedicate it to her, who sits there."
When this write-up sees the light of day, the next phase of Underground - Rock prelims - would have been completed. The metal and heavy metal prelims is on October 22. And on October 29 is what is grandly titled as "The Showdown", when the ultimate band or as the organisers call it, `The Last Band Standing,' will be decided from among the bands that won the rock and metal prelims. And it is on this day that the judges will remove the veil over the performances that they think deserve prizes in over three dozen categories that include the best a cappella group, instrumentalist, percussionist and acoustic band.
