Classical best

Amjad Ali Khan... EMI...

Ustad Sultan Khan...

EMI... Rs. 75

LISTENING TO maestros is always a pleasure. And when there is a series on instrumental and vocal music one surely has to grab it. Virgin Records has been coming up with classical albums that are a treat to the ears.

Amjad Ali Khan weaves magic through the sarod in this album. The maestro is at his melodious best as he strums with virtuosity. He plays Bhimpalasi - from outlining the raag in the alaap to the jor and jhala. A vilambit gat in rupak taal and a drut gat in teen tal complete the raag. His unique creation a raag called Tribute to America is also included in this album. The Ustad is supported by Abhijit on the tabla and Subhalakshmi (his wife) on the tanpura.

Mention of Ustad Sultan Khan immediately brings the sarangi to mind. His tonal ornamentation is to be heard and experienced. He is able to bring out the nuances of the raag through gamaks and taan patterns.

An alaap and jor in Raag Marwa is followed by vilambit bandish in teen taal, madhya bandish in Rupak taal and drut bandish in ek taal. Raag Bhairavi comes alive with a dhun in Dadra taal. Anuradha Pal accompanies the Ustad on the tabla.
