Small screen KAREENA

HER DEBUT role on television has more than a faint stamp of her real life.

If Kareena Sood in Zee TV's tele-soap Kareena Kareena beginning this Monday, is a `Sardarni' from Chandigarh trying to thrive in Amchi Mumbai, then actress Kulraj Randhwa is no different. Kareena makes no big deal about telling lies for `a bigger truth' and playing this role, Kulraj says, she is also no saint.

"At times, I too tell a lie if it does good to anyone I care about," she reasons. But the similarities do not end there. "There are many other examples of small town girl behaviour in this fictional character which I can identify with. At times, I too behave like her, she is almost real." So she agrees with Zee TV Head of Programming Ashwin Yardi that Kareena Sood would gel well with the audience. All the more important, as the other girl-next-door Jasmeet Walia, aka Jassi, on Sony TV features on the tube at the same time - 9.30 p.m. Monday to Thursday. And, she is already a prime time popular sweetheart.

"I know that it is a bit of a challenge. But Kareena has no forced humour, no unnatural situation. Any girl can be Kareena," Kulraj throws out the challenge.

Bollywood dreams

Now in Mumbai for a year, beginning life as a journalist only to be spotted by well-known acting school owner Kishore Namit Kapoor and asked to deliberate on acting as a career, Kulraj says, her next stop would definitely be Bollywood.

"I am getting offers for films from the South. But why go half way if you have decided to be in films? I am waiting for a Hindi film offer." Confidence and loads of giggles never seem to leave Kulraj. Blessed with a dimpled smile that gives her instant attention, this defence official's daughter though, has no `Littu' waiting for an arranged marriage in hometown Chandigarh. "Though I have a career deadline to follow like Kareena's," says Kulraj. Sold on `green' Chandigarh, Mumbai, she feels is "too mechanical." And now, working for about 16 hours a day, she has reason to believe that in Mumbai, "everyone is running."

But Kulraj has a goal in mind.
