Sense-or sensibility

Actors Radhika and Lakshmi Gopalaswamy (down) are part of the debate on censorship

FILM HAS become more than just entertainment, and as a medium, it has the power to influence mind and society. Hence the intense debate about censorship of content and method of expression. Taking this debate to a larger platform is The Rotary Club of Bangalore in association with Heritage, a non-profit organisation. They will conduct a seminar, Films, Social Impact, and Censorship today at the Rotary House of Friendship on Lavelle Road.

Common platform

The seminar is being conducted to provide a platform for various segments of the industry, representatives from various walks of life, citizens, and the student community to participate and air their views, share opinions and express comments.

Participants in the national seminar will comprise eminent producers and directors, well-known artistes and film critics. They include M. Bhaktavatsala, film producer and former President of the Film Federation of India; actor-director-producer Radhikaa; Gowri Ramnarayan, journalist; M.K. Raghavendra, critic; Ajit Bhide, psychiatrist; S. Mariswamy, Commissioner of Police, M.S. Thimappa, Vice-Chancellor, Bangalore University; Ramnath Narayanaswamy, professor, IIM; and Prakash Belawadi, theatreperson.

Members of the Central Film Censor Board from Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Chennai, will also present their views. The seminar will begin at 8 a.m. and end by 2 p.m.

A `Big Fight' will be conducted from 6.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. on Freedom in Television — How Far and How Much? This programme will feature Shekar Seshadri, psychiatrist; G.K.
