A heady mix

Renuka Chowdhury with Monish Gujral.

SUFI QAWAALI and food from the age-old Moti Mahal restaurant of Delhi. And for star value, fitted in Tourism Minister Renuka Chowdhury. All at The Ashok this past week.

The ocassion was the launch of a CD - "Moti Mahal Qawalli Trail", a T-Series production featuring some of the city's old qawaalis.

Organised by Monish Gujral, owner of Moti Mahal restaurant, the pledge behind it was to "revive the qawaali nights in the city," something which the restaurant has been doing for ages by serving food in a mileu scented with lively qawaali nazm.

Packed with invited guests, Monish took the opportunity to announce that the move was also a part of "reaching out to the people and carry forward the age-old traditions."

"Earlier this year, we launched a book of my grandfather Kundan Lal Gujral's recipes, the man who started the Moti Mahal chain and this is yet another move," Monish said. "Kundal Lal is the man who introduced butter chicken to the world," he added too.

The qawaali performance by Chand Nijami from Sikandra Gharana, thereafter took over the show. Later, Nijami was heard saying, "There are not many good qawwals these days. So the standard of qawwali is going down by the day. The young generation can't understand Sufi qawwali. That is also the reason of its decling popularity."

Well noted!
