Hot destination

Want to go on a foreign trip? Choose Singapore, says S. GANESAN

DREAMING OF a value-for-money getaway that stamps your passport? Head for Singapore. With its new look promos, Singapore is beckoning with all its fun and entertainment. And most importantly, its affordable.

The South East Asian destination has already caught the imagination of Tiruchiites. The number of outbound visitors to Singapore has grown by a healthy 12 per cent in the first eight months. It is expected to go up further, as per the projections of Singapore Tourism Board (STB).

"If the trend is sustained, it can become a record year," say the STB officials.

Tiruchi apparently sends more outbound visitors to Singapore than other bigger or affluent cities like Coimbatore. This is a reason enough for the STB to fan out to local travel agents.

Promotional campaign

A roadshow called `Uniquely Singapore,' was recently unveiled to travel industry partners here with the aim to enhance the visibility of Singapore as a tourism hub. Apart from promoting the destination, the professional show also worked as a lesson in tourism marketing. Wiith its blend of modernity and tradition, Singapore has emerged as a hot destination of late and an increasing number of middle class families now prefer to holiday there. The distance and declining airfares appears to be encouraging the city's middle class tourist to go international.

India ranks seventh in terms of foreign visitors in Singapore. "Our business from second rung cities is growing and Tiruchi is an important market," says Bridget Goh, STB's Area Director, who led the two-member brand presentation team.

Buoyed by the growing market, STB plans to target more aggressively the business and corporate, the middle class and the student's fraternity. It is keen on promoting Singapore as a centre for higher education.

World of possibility

While there has been an increase in first-time visitors too, Singapore offers something for all categories of tourists. "There's something new every time you visit Singapore," follows P.Shashi Kumar, the Marketing Officer.

Singapore is unique in as much it offers a world of possibilities. With the characteristic Asian hospitality and state-of-the-art infrastructure, even a short stay offers an enriching and memorable experience for all age groups. And the STB is working on special tailormade packages that would suit all groups.

Given the boom, the airlines operators cannot afford to sit pretty. The Indian Airlines is already offering direct check-in service at Tiruchi for a Singapore link flight from Chennai. More foreign carriers, including Silk Air, a subsidiary of the Singapore Airlines is eyeing Tiruchi for introduction of flights once the runway expansion is completed at Tiruchi Airport.
