Raiders' theme

THERE ARE two characters Harrison Ford is best remembered by - the maverick pilot Han Solo in the Star Wars trilogy and the adventurer archaeologist Indiana Jones in the trilogy of hair-raising adventures. The first of the series, The Raiders of the Lost Ark saw unprecedented box office returns and a hero was born.

Director Steven Spielberg expanded the Saturday afternoon serial thriller format to a cinematic sensation with heart-stopping moments every 15 minutes. The Fedora sporting, bull whip cracking Indy was the perfect hero, taking time out to beat up the bad guys, make a few wise cracks, win the girl and do some archaeological hi-jinks.

Shot over 73 days in four countries, the movie offered the right amount of exotica and danger. The second movie, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, was banned in India for its portrayal of rather bizarre practices - the stomach turning meal was just one of them.

The movie was fun to watch mainly to see Amrish Puri hamming away to glory as the wicked priest and Indy talking in Hindi - he says something to the effect of "Tum Shiva ke bhakt nahin hai."

The third movie, The Last Crusade finds Indy joined by his father, also an archaeologist, Dr Jones, played with ιlan by Sean Connery. Spielberg directed the trilogy and there are talks of Ford starring in a fourth adventure. While we wait for that one, we could watch the first three on Zee Movie Zone on Sundays at 8 pm starting from November 14. The game's afoot!
