IF MANISH MALHOTRA'S ensemble brought ponchos to Hyderabad, drapes from Rocky S are sure to sway in town. The designer continues his LIFW'04 dresses `n' drapes statement for girls with his Autumn Winter sporty look for men, which was evident in the fashion show at ITC Kakatiya Sheraton Hotel & Towers recently where Rocky unveiled his collection for Strip.Over 80 designs, donned by Nina Emmanuel, Upen Patel, Candice Pinto, Sampada Inamdar and other leading models, screamed the designer's youthful and in-your-face fashion philosophy laced with loads of sensuality.
The non-stop fashion train featured denims capris, skirts and shorts teamed with lycra and knit tops in black and magenta and gypsy skirts paired with brocade tops. For guys, the combat trousers, inarguably haute when compared to cargoes, teamed with short sleeve and sleeveless shirts comprised the sporty look.
A generous helping of blacks broken by streaks of pink for the clubbing season, and spaghetti was the hallmark of the designer's women's western casual and formal wear.
The ethnic line, a fusion treat, featured skirts and flared kurtas and churidars in shaded sheer fabrics, a collection that will be a rage with the fashionistas."The Indian wear is chic and very wearable. Also, I guess this is the first time that we had a fashion show of this kind," socialite and fashion co-ordinator Kamini Saraf said.
The event was marked by the absence of ananchor belting out details about the lines or the designer, as Rohit Reddy of Strip decided to let the connoisseurs check out the ensembles and interpret them for themselves. The applause in Hyder Mahal, as he walked the ramp in a Rocky S outfit, said it all. "The collection is already at the store. There has been a tremendous demand for Rocky S with youngsters. The preview was `sold out' just like Manish Malhotra. This is the second designer that we are launching in the city. I am keeping my promise of changing the fashion scene in Hyderabad and am hopefully succeeding in doing so. There's more in the offing in January. One more designer, that I would like to keep a surprise," says Rohit Reddy. Way to go.
Season's forecast
"THIS IS not inspired by Bollywood. It is an out and out Autumn Winter prêt line for Strip. There is the festive element as well lots of embellishment and sequins," explains Rocky S.Talking about the silhouettes, "the western line has a gypsy feel with flared skirts in brown and burgundy. The Indian wear is a fusion line, mostly drapes in georgettes and chiffons." Apart from his favourite lycra, the designer works with newer fabrics like "a lot of cotton spandex for the combat pants that are in vogue this season in men's fashion."
In a world where bohemia and retro-chic rule, here is a designer who has the trend conscious going berserk on his body flattering ensembles.
Sheer finesse tempered by attitude, that's Rocky S for you.
